Characteristics of the Mustang horse

Among the many beautiful and fascinating horse breeds is the Mustang horse. It is a horse that originated in North America and is highly resistant to fatigue. It is a fast, freedom-loving horse that over the years has given much satisfaction to breeders and athletes all over the world. Let’s get to know it better.

The special features of a unique specimen

The Mustang horse is beautiful and its coat is decidedly elegant. He was first heard of in the 16th century. At that time, Spanish horses were brought to Mexico and some of the horses escaped to North America. Over the years they reproduced, mating with local specimens, and the Mustang breed was born. However, it was only made official in the 19th century, following its encounter with other breeds. The Mustang horse therefore has a rich and special genetic heritage.

The Mustang horse over time

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were about one million Mustangs in North America. Unfortunately, these horses were highly valued by those working in the military, but also in the food industry. This soon led to a considerable decline in the number of Mustang horses. Over time, the breed did not recover much, which is why it is now a protected breed in the United States. There is also a special programme that constantly monitors the number of animals present.

A beautiful animal

The Mustang horse has a beautiful coat of different colours depending on the characteristics of its parents. It is a mesomorphic specimen with a height at withers that varies from a minimum of 135 centimetres to a maximum of 150 centimetres. Although not very tall, this horse is nevertheless very fast and strong. It can weigh a maximum of 500 kilograms, making it very robust and muscular. Small ears, short neck, rounded structure and very hard hooves are its main characteristics.

The Mustang horse is not the classic long-limbed horse, but is nevertheless very beautiful and powerful. It generally has a docile but courageous character. It loves to run and is not grumpy towards humans. It can currently be found on numerous farms in the United States. For example, it can be found in the Wild Horse Sanctuary. In this 360-hectare area, the tradition of the Native Americans and the Mustang horse is fervently handed down. It is an Arapaho and Shoshone reserve, where horses live in the wild in harmony and freedom.
